.de Domain – What To Consider For A Domain Registration In Germany

Germany offers a strong and appealing market for many businesses. However, registering a .de domain name comes with a few extra steps. The .de domain is in the top 10 most popular top-level domains in the world. But in order to use it, you’ll need to meet some legal conditions.

We’ve pulled together the key points you should know about registering a domain in Germany. This guide gives you an overview of the process, so you know what to expect. Since this isn’t legal advice, we recommend speaking to a solicitor who understands domain law in Germany. You’ll find some helpful links below to make that easier.

Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) .de – Regulations

When you register a .de domain, it’s treated similarly to setting up a business in Germany. You’ll either need to have a physical business presence in the country or appoint someone based there to represent you legally. This needs to be in place within the first two weeks of using the domain. Often, a solicitor can take on this role.

DENIC Registry

DENIC is the central authority that manages the .de domain space. They oversee more than 16 million registered domains; a number that is growing every day. If you register a .de domain through a provider, it will be recorded in the DENIC database.

If you appoint a representative, they’ll need to be approved by DENIC. You must provide a valid name and full address — PO boxes are not accepted. If this information is inaccurate or incomplete, DENIC has the authority to remove the domain from its registry.

Why Trademark Protection Matters

Beyond domain registration, consider securing your trademark. This is particularly important if your brand name could be interpreted in different ways or used in unrelated industries. Without legal protection, others could operate under your name without your permission.

Alternatives To A ccTLD In Germany

If you are not planning to go through the additional admin of having a .de domain registered in Germany, Google recommends two possible alternatives to target the German market. These could be:

  • subdirectory with gTLD – webhummel.co.uk/de
  • subdomain with gTLD – de.webhummel.co.uk.

The ccTLDs and both gTLD alternatives have pros and cons, which you should consider before choosing a suitable alternative. You can see all alternatives and pros and cons in the overview below.
